Seven

Shane sat in his apartment, surrounded by books, paper, notebooks, pens, and note cards. It looked like a tornado had touched down. He was drowning. He tried bouncing between subjects to study, but that was just making his head hurt, so he gave up and focused on one class after another. He mostly had non-music electives and they were kicking his ass.

As he got completely immersed in studying and focusing on everything he had to do, Shane lost track of time. Finally, he set aside the textbook on sociology, ready to take a break, and took a deep breath. As he exhaled, a knock tapped at the door. As Shane set aside his books, Liam burst into the room, Ellie and Trick trailing behind.

“Heyyyyy,” Liam said, exuberant.

Shane looked up from his place on the floor and Liam’s face fell. “What’s up, Liam?”

“You look like shit, dude.”

“Liam!” Ellie shut the door behind them.

“Well, it’s true,” he said.

Shane shrugged. “What are you guys doing here?”

“Dude. Team meeting.” The reply came from Trick as he picked carefully around Shane’s things to find a seat that wouldn’t disturb the chaos. He settled on the couch.

“Shit, really?” Shane had completely forgotten. In fact, he didn’t remember even now.

Ellie shrugged. “It’s fine. We’ll figure it out. Do you need help cleaning up so we can meet?”

What Shane really needed was help studying, but he nodded anyway. “Sure. Let me just …” He began stacking notes with their correct textbook and notebook. Ellie bent and began helping.

“What’s this meeting about, anyway?”

“Dude,” Liam groaned as if hurt.

Ellie sighed. “Liam, do you actually have another word?”

“No.”

“Seriously, though, what are we meeting about?” Shane still couldn’t remember even planning a meeting.

“The next album,” Ellie said quietly. “You said you had some good songs for us. We were going to compare notes.”

Okay, Shane really didn’t remember this, but at least it was something he could handle. He did have a few songs to share, and he knew the others would, too.

When the room was tidied, they sat and discussed the songs Shane had been working on. The group really liked his ballad, the one he’d finally admit was inspired by Ari, but weren’t so fond of the party-rock tune he’d been fooling around with. It wasn’t “on brand,” Ellie said. Fair enough. He had a few more up his sleeve. Each of them took a turn sharing what they’d been writing, and when they were done, they had a good collection of seven songs to start an album with. Of course, each song would have to be reworked a little by the group to keep their voice consistent, but other than that, they had a good start.

Three hours later, the band left. Shane’s body was heavy, and his eyelids could barely stay open. He had to focus, though. He’d canceled a date with Ari tonight to study. When was he going to fit in seeing him again? Shane forced himself to stay awake and keep studying, but at some point, even he realized the words on the page had become meaningless.
